Several of the terns are very similar in appearance. Forster's Tern looks so much like a Common Tern that it was largely overlooked by many of the first birders and ornithologists to study these species. However, Forster's Tern is more of a marsh bird at most seasons, especially in summer, when it often nests on top of muskrat houses. Unlike the Common Tern, the Forster's Tern regularly winters along our southern coasts.
